Passamezzo and John Newton (narrator) present an evening of English 17th century music to celebrate the 400th anniversary of Ben Jonson’s ground-breaking publication The Works.
Ben Jonson (1572-1637) was an early modern playwright whose popularity rivalled that of Shakespeare and Marlowe. He spent multiple stints in prison, wrote masques in which the Queen of England and Prince of Wales performed, and was crowned England’s first poet laureate.
On this dramatic musical voyage we shall learn about the life of Shakespeare’s friend and greatest contemporary, and through the music of his time we’ll accompany Jonson on a remarkable walk he embarked on in his middle age from London to Edinburgh – details of which have only recently been discovered.
