Bringing classical music of the highest quality to Hackney audiences

Our next concert is a welcome return by the charismatic young singer Raphaela Papadakis, accompanied by Alessandro Ruisi on the violin. Raphaela first sang for us in Schönberg’s Pierrot Lunaire – she is a very strong interpreter of twentieth-century music. They are offering a fascinating all-English programme with songs by Vaughan Williams – Along the Field and Two English Folksongs – set alongside other English works for this unusual voice-and-violin combination: Holst’s Four Songs for Voice and Violin, a song by Ivor Gurney and a new piece by George Arthur. Along the Field is based on two sets of poems by A. E. Housman – “A Shropshire Lad” and “Last Poems” – and is a reflection on the themes of love and death. The Two English Folksongs – “Searching for Lambs” and “The Lawyers” – deserve more regular performance, but are rarely heard because of this unusual scoring.
